Multimedia (Videos, Sound Clips, Images, Etc)
[edit]If someone could add videos of salsa dancing to Wikipedia directly (that is, not as external links), that would be great. I think it would enhance the article a lot, after all, if a picture is worth 1,000 words, a video must be worth a million. You would need to upload the video in ogg format, I guess, plus there are copyright issues that you'd need to be aware of, I'm sure. Videos of different styles of social dancing would be good.

So I checked it out, and it turns out that the copyright issues for video uploads are actually quite bothersome. According to the Wikipedia Commons on Licensing:
- Republication and distribution must be allowed.
- Publication of derivative work must be allowed.
- Commercial use of the work must be allowed.
- The license must be perpetual (non-expiring) and non-revocable.
This includes being able to modify the video and republish it. That, along with the commercial use clause, are worrisome, because who knows, your video might end up in a commercial or used for some other promotional thing! I can see why now how hard it would be to get someone's permission to record them salsa dancing, and then to essentially donate their video to the Wikipedia Commons for all the world to use, in any way that they wish!
In my opinion, this makes it even more important to keep good examples of salsa dancing in the External Links section, since you can link to videos on YouTube, for example, and not worry as much about copyright and stuff (you still need to worry about copyright, but not as much as with donating your own work!).

Origins
[edit]I'm confused. From the main text I can read the following passage at the beginning.
Salsa is a popular form of social dance that originated in Cuba and Puerto Rico.[citation needed] [...] The dance, along with salsa music, originated in the mid-1970s in New York.
So, where did originate? Cuba and Puerto Rico or New York? -- Atcold (talk) 08:50, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
Actually origins in Cuba but it developed a lot in New York. TL-WP-CA (talk) 05:45, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
Research using salsa dancing.
[edit]There are several academic studies that use salsa dancing as a research setting. I suggest a section called "Research situated on salsa dancing" MexFin (talk) 11:14, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
Eddie Torres
[edit]the link tagged to Eddie Torres's name goes to Tito Puente - while he was more involved from the conceptual perspective and promoting the the actual music - Eddie Torres is a different person who indeed formalised the steps with his short video lessons. Hence the link should be separate and there shoudl be a separate mentioning of Toto Puente and his role. 91.200.88.238 (talk) 10:08, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
